Table Games

Most of us understand how to play one or two table games found in a casino, however the majority of us don’t understand how to play all the table games found in London’s casinos. Curiosity might mean we watch a game or two of Craps or Baccarat in the hope that we gain some understanding of how to play, but for the most part asking the croupier how to play the game we are curious about at a busy table is an embarrassing thought.

We’ve provided a brief introduction into the various table games found in most casinos in and around central London which gives a brief insight into how most table games are played and the rules surrounding each game.

Introduction into Baccarat

Baccarat is one of the most popular table games, especially in Asia. It is also one of the oldest casino games, first introduced in Italy in the 15th century. There are three main versions of Baccarat: punto banco, baccarat chemin de fer (“Chemmy”) and baccarat banque (“a deux tableaux”).

Each version of baccarat has slightly different rules, but the game is generally played by comparing the cards of the "player" and the "banker.” Before the cards are dealt, each player bets on which hand they think will win: player, banker, or tie. The object of the game is to have the highest value hand at the end of the round. Strict rules govern how each hand is scored, and nine is the highest possible value in the game.

Baccarat is a pure game of chance with fewer strategies available for players to master than in games like Blackjack. The players’ odds of winning are slightly lower than the bankers; typically, the player's hand will win 44.62 percent of the time. In many casinos, baccarat is considered the table game that caters to high rollers, also known as “whales.” However, with the introduction of mini-baccarat and online gaming, anyone with a minimum bet of $10 can play baccarat.

The game is not too difficult to play, but it does require some knowledge of the rules that govern each round. Baccarat—the favourite game of fictional character James Bond—can be a very exciting table game, once players have a bit of practice.

Introduction into 3 Card Poker

As the name suggests, Three Card Poker is a version of traditional poker with one slight twist: players are only dealt three cards. This change speeds up the game of poker, making it an exciting, fast-paced casino table game.

The objective of Three Card Poker is to play the best hand of poker possible. To play, players place a wager on the table, betting that their hand will include at least one pair or better. After the bets are placed, three cards are dealt to each player and the dealer.

One of the main differences between regular poker and Three Card Poker is that players only compete against the dealer, not the other players at the table. This setup is similar to other table games like Blackjack.

In the Ante/Play version of Three Card Poker, players win by beating the dealer’s hand. The winner is determined by who has the highest valued poker hand. Another version of Three Card Poker known as Pair Plus works differently. Instead of competing against the dealer, players are paid based on the strength of their hand. Payouts are predetermined, making this version a non-competitive game of chance.

Three Card Poker is a popular table game because it’s fast-paced, exciting and easy to play. There are lots of chances to win, and the house edge is relatively low (typically 2%-4%). While the Pair Plus of Three Card Poker is a pure game of chance, the Ante/Play version can be played with a variety of strategies that improve players’ chances of winning.

Introduction into Dice (Craps)

Looking for the craps table? Just listen for the yelling and shouting, and you’ll be sure to come across it. Craps, also known as dice, is one of the most exciting table games in the casino. It is played using two dice, which are tossed across the craps table. The dice at each table are constantly inspected and replaced by the dealer to ensure that there is no damage.

At first glance, the craps table can look rather intimidating. It’s crowded with players and dealers, and the table is covered with different labelled spaces (e.g. Pass Line, Come and Don’t Pass Bar). However, after learning the rules, players will see that craps is not as difficult as it appears.

To play, the shooter makes a bet and places chips on a particular space on the table. The other players may also bet on or against the shooter. The shooter then takes the dice and rolls two of them across the table far enough so that they both hit the opposite wall. The winning bets are based on the combined sum of the dice, and the shooter may then continue to roll or decide to give up the dice.

Before playing craps, players should learn about the table layout, common calls and bets. There are tons of ways to wager in craps and decisions are made quickly, so players need to be aware of these possibilities. Once players have a basic sense of these rules, they will enjoy the fun and exciting atmosphere of the craps table.

Introduction into Punto Banco

Punto Banco is the most popular version of Baccarat played in casinos around the world. Its name refers to the opposing sides in the game: the player (punto) and the bank (banco). The object of punto banco is to have a hand closest in value to nine.

To play, each player bets on which hand they think will win: player, banker, or tie. Strict rules govern how each hand is scored. Cards with a value of ten (e.g. jacks, queens and kings) are worthless. Aces are worth one, and other cards have the value shown. The value of each hand is determined by adding up the value of the cards and then using the value of last digit. For example, a hand of 6 and 7 has a total of 13 and thus a value of 3 in punto banco.

In punto banco, the players’ odds of winning are slightly lower than the bankers, and the payouts are similar. A bet on the player (punto) winning is paid out evenly, and a bet on the dealer (banco) winning is 19:20. Therefore, the house has a slight edge in punto banco. Winning on a tie is paid at 8:1.

The only decision players need to make in punto banco is how to place their bet. After that, the cards are dealt, and the winners are determined. With it’s exciting atmosphere and simple rules, it’s easy to see why punto banco is one of the most popular table games in the world.
